You collect the keys to your freshly renovated home, open the door, and there it is: that sharp new smell. Most people take it as the smell of a job well done. It is worth knowing what you are actually breathing, because that smell is largely formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds, and it is not as harmless as it seems.

Where It Comes From

Formaldehyde is used in the adhesives that bind engineered wood, laminates and plywood, the very materials most modern carpentry is built from. New paint, varnish and some furniture release it too. In a home full of brand new built in wardrobes, kitchen cabinets and feature walls, there is a lot of freshly cut, freshly glued material all off gassing at once.

How Long It Lasts

This is the part that surprises people. Off gassing does not clear in a few days. It can continue for months, and in a warm, humid climate like Singapore the process is accelerated, because heat and humidity draw the compounds out of the materials faster.
